MEMA ENCOURAGES THE USE OF SOCIAL MEDIA DURING HURRICANES

PEARL –The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency wants to encourage the use of social networking during hurricanes to receive vital emergency information from MEMA, as well as other state and local agencies.

MEMA Director Robert Latham said it is important that MEMA communicates through a variety of media resources to encourage people to take precautions before the start of hurricane season.

MEMA uses Facebook, Twitter and YouTube as vehicles to get messages out, in addition to the traditional avenues of public information.

The agency has more than 19,000 followers on Facebook, and more than 8,000 on Twitter. The public can follow updates and receive tips, via twitter, by following the username MSEMA or visiting http://twitter.com/msema. On Facebook, search Mississippi Emergency Management Agency.

Gov. Phil Bryant declared May 27-31 as Hurricane Preparedness Week.
