December 16 Tornado Outbreak – Updated Statewide Damage Reports to MEMA as of 4 PM

 

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) has received damage reports from 14 counties due to the tornadoes and severe storms that impacted the state Monday, December 16.

As of this afternoon, there are reports of 15 tornadoes impacting 15 counties, but that number will likely change as National Weather Service offices survey the damaged areas. There are also 775 power outages statewide, which is down from nearly 8,000 Tuesday.

Listed below are damage reports to the counties affected by the tornado outbreak. These numbers can still change as assessments continue. Confirmed tornadoes and the counties they impacted are also listed below.

Initial damage reports by county:

  • Amite: 20 homes damaged
    • EF-2 tornado
  • Clarke: 15 homes damaged
  • Claiborne: EF-1 tornado
  • Franklin: One home damaged, one business damaged
  • Hinds: 62 homes damaged, 2 businesses damaged
  • Jasper: Three chicken farms destroyed
  • Jefferson Davis: EF-2 tornado that traveled from Lawrence County
  • Jones: 208 homes damaged, 25 businesses damaged
    • EF-3 tornado that traveled from Lamar County
  • Lamar: 16 homes damaged, 11 businesses damaged
    • EF-3 tornado that traveled into Jones County
  • Lawrence: EF-2 tornado that traveled into Jefferson County
  • Lee: 37 homes damaged
    • EF-2 tornado
    • EF-0 tornado
  • Lincoln: 15 homes damaged
  • Marion: 14 homes damaged, 16 businesses damaged

  • Prentiss: EF-0 tornado
  • Simpson: Five homes damaged
    • EF-3 tornado that traveled into Smith County
  • Smith: 100 homes damaged, three chicken farms destroyed

  • Tishomingo: 13 homes damaged, three businesses damaged
    • EF-1 tornado
  • Union: 12 homes damaged
    • EF-1 tornado

PEARL (12/18/19) – In response to Monday’s tornado outbreak, The Salvation Army and the American Red Cross will be offering lunch and dinner at shelters located in Laurel.

-American Red Cross – Ellis Center Gym, 610 Munson Street

As of this afternoon, there are reports of 14 tornadoes, but that number will likely change as National Weather Service offices survey the damaged areas. There are also 7,934 power outages statewide.

The following damage reports serve only as initial assessments from the county emergency management offices and will change (either higher or lower) as MEMA receives additional reports and assessments.

  • Simpson: Homes damaged, church damaged
  • Smith: Homes damaged, trees and power lines down, roads closed
