Winter Weather in North Mississippi, Severe Storms Possible South

PEARL – The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency is urging citizens to be aware of winter weather in the northern part of the state as well as the possibility of severe thunderstorms in the central and south portions of Mississippi this evening.

The National Weather Service in Memphis has issued:

Winter Storm Warning until midnight for Coahoma, Desoto and Tunica counties.

  • Up to fourth tenths an inch of ice and up to two tenths inch of sleet.

Winter Weather Advisory until midnight: Benton Marshall, Panola, Tate, Tallahatchie and Quitman Counties.

  • Up to two tenths inch of ice and sleet.

Flash Flood Warning for Coahoma, Desoto and Tunica counties as well.

These conditions could cause sporadic power outages and create very hazardous driving conditions.

There is also the possibility of severe thunderstorms in central, south and east Mississippi after 5 p.m. as a cold front moves through. Wind gusts of 50 to 60 mph could occur.

MEMA and county emergency managers will monitor the situation closely and provide updates as necessary.
