May 6-7, 2026, Severe Weather Update #5

PEARL, Miss. (MEMA) – The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA), along with state and local officials, faith-based organizations, volunteers, and private sector partners, continues to respond to the severe weather that struck the state on May 6 and 7, 2026. The National Weather Service has confirmed that eight tornadoes touched down in Mississippi on the evening of May 6th, 2026. This includes an EF-3 tornado that was over a mile wide and was on the ground for 69.8 miles from Wilkinson County to Lawrence County, an EF-2 tornado that touched down in Lamar County, and an additional four EF-1 tornadoes and two EF-0 tornadoes impacted the state.

MEMA teams are in the field, validating damage numbers as counties work to continue damage assessments. MEMA has received reports of damage to 403 homes and 21 businesses statewide. Of the homes affected, 78 were destroyed, while 77 sustained major damage. These figures are subject to change as further evaluations are conducted.

Starting Wednesday, the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) is providing free Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis) vaccinations and birth certificates to residents impacted during last week’s tornadoes in Lincoln, Lamar and Franklin counties. Residents and first responders ages 19 and older in the impacted area can receive the Tdap vaccine at no cost, regardless of insurance status, by visiting the MSDH mobile unit in the parking lot at the address below:

  • Operational Timeline:
    • Wednesday, May 13 – Operational Period: 0800–1600
    • Thursday, May 14 – Operational Period: 0800–1600
    • Friday, May 15 – Closeout: 0800–1100

The Donation Intake Center is located at 702 Saints Trail NW, Brookhaven, MS 39601. The hours of operation are from 8 am to 4 pm. They are accepting donations of hygiene products, diapers, non-perishable foods, cleaning supplies, buckets, gas cans, chainsaws, and shower wipes. They do not need bottled water or tarps, and no clothing donations are needed currently. 

Points of distribution sites are located at the following locations:

  • East Lincoln Fire Department, 3347 East Lincoln Rd SE, Brookhaven, MS
  • Bogue Chitto Fire Department, 351 Bogue Chitto Rd SE, Bogue Chitto, MS

Lincoln County:

  • All roadways have been cleared of debris. EPAs continue to shut roads down as needed to restore power.
  • Damage assessments have begun with assistance through MCDEMA; Supported by Hinds, Covington, Jones, Forrest, Amite, and MEMA. 
  • Damage Assessments are approximately 60% completed.
  • ARC Shelter, located at the Brookhaven FEMA building, had an occupancy of 0 overnight.
  • All Clothing donations need to be sent to Saint Andrews at 720 South Broadway St in McComb.
  • Feeding Operations continue at Bogue Chitto FD, East Lincoln FD, and Bogue Chitto Baptist Church.
  • Calvary Baptist Church will be serving lunch on 5/12
  • Samaritans Purse has started operating a Volunteer Intake Organization Site at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and will be doing orientation for volunteers at 7:30 AM and 12:30 PM. These two orientations will run every day until the need is met.
  • Numerous volunteer organizations are assisting with private property debris removal and assistance with cleanups.

Lamar County:

  • Power has been restored to all citizens who can receive power.
  • Saferoom has moved to standby and is available if the need arises.
  • Red Cross, Salvation Army, MS Baptist Relief, Samaritan’s Purse, Temple Baptist, and others are on scene and actively working.
  • At this time, there are no additional resources needed.

Franklin County:

  • EOC has returned to normal operations and will continue to assist citizens as the needs arise.

The following counties have submitted official damage reports to the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency. Damages reported range from affected to destroyed. These numbers can change through the assessment process.

  • Wilkinson – 3 homes, 2 Farm buildings
